Hey parents, how did your first week as a homeschool teacher go???

I’m sure most parents have a new level of respect for their children's teachers, After it was announced that schools were closing amid the coronavirus pandemic, and parents had to step up and prepare to take in the role as home room teacher … Many found out, homeschooling doesn’t just involve reading, writing and ‘rithmetic …

Parents learned this week that math is taught so different now. A lot of parent admitted to using Mr. Google to be able to help their children.

Some parents played it smart and decided to put home economics back into the school system… Cooking 101, Washing Dishes 101A, Laundry 102, Sewing 102A, Vacuuming 103 & Garbage 104…

Parents relax, no one expects you to be the perfect teacher, homeschooling isn't school. Kids accustomed to the school environment won't be as focused. Lessons won't be as professional as the ones they're used to getting. And since our governments are encouraging everyone to minimize interactions with others, socialization will be the hardest part.

Parents learned this week it's important to have set hours for school, meals, chores and other daily activities. Many routine activities were disrupted, last week was an emotional process for everyone, Kids and parents, both had to learn a new routine.

I’m sure a lot of parents have learned Some children are self-motivated, But some may need time limits or incentives like, 'You need to finish ABC before you can XYZ.' Not every student is a morning person, but it's much easier to accomplish what you need to first thing, before the whole day slips by, so that's a great case for building incentives into your new routine — just as you encourage your children to eat their vegetables before they can have a slice of cake.

Parents learned that incentives like time with electronics or playtime once schoolwork is complete was Necessary. Parents figured out what’s as the best time for breaks. Like when your child is struggling through a math assignment, a quick 15-minute break can do wonders for both their patience and their ability to get through the material.

Parents found out that it’s ok to make it fun, everything is an opportunity to learn, and being at home with their kids gave them the chance to try some outside-the-box ways to absorb information.

Some parents said Grocery shopping became a school lesson on color, shape and sizes for their younger children to multiplication and percentages for their older ones, Taking a long walk became a lesson in botany or biology. And those experiences also become field trips that were a blast and something special because they are schooling their children.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter all that much if your child finished their math work before their science, Let them decide which subject they'd like to dive into first, or better yet, grab a spiral notebook or a piece of paper and simply write out the assignments they need to finish for the day. Let them work through the list in whatever order they'd like, checking them off as they go. You don’t have to stress about the little things.

You've been thrown into a situation that is unfamiliar and somewhat scary, Your 'school day' will not be perfect, and that's OK. Just try to remember that you're both adjusting to something new and there will be some bumps along the way.

This may be an unexpected occurrence, but it may turn out to be the blessing you never thought you wanted. So hang in there parents you got this and your doing a great job…

Stay blessed

XOXO
