Educational program offered for children ages 14-18 who are interested in a legal career or learning more about the law.
Court Camp is an educational program offered each summer for children ages 14-18 who are interested in a legal career or learning more about the law and the North Carolina Judicial Branch. The week-long camps take place at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

Participants of Court Camp learn about the North Carolina Judicial System, meet Judges, Attorneys, Court Reporters, Interpreters, Clerks, Court Administrators and other personnel, take behind-the-scenes tours of the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, Mecklenburg County Jail, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Crime Lab, CPCC’s Criminal Justice Department, and a large law firm. Participants also observe live criminal and civil trials and participate in a mock crime scene and mock trial. The curriculum includes guest speakers, classroom lecture, videos, field trips, and hands-on activities. A graduation ceremony is held on the last day of the camp at which parents are invited to attend. Participants are supervised by an adult at all times during Court Camp.

  On Easter Sunday in 1873, The Colfax Massacre occurred, killing more than 150 African Americans. The battle-turned-massacre took place in the small town of Colfax, Louisiana as a clash between blacks and whites.  The massacre took place due to racial tensions following the  Louisiana governor’s race of 1872. Allow me to introduce you to Ms. Khadijah Laidford, I had the pleasure of meeting her a few weeks ago  at an event I attended. Ms. Khadijah Laidford is a 24-year-old New York native that moved to Charlotte NC in 2015. Shortly after her arrival, Khadijah started her career in law enforcement where she gained hands-on experience working with juvenile teens. Khadijah’s time as a correctional officer is when she realized that she wanted to be more involved with helping the youth. Thereon strategizing and brainstorming on the many ways, Khadijah came up with an idea that she wanted to start a nonprofit for at-risk youth, where she would provide youth with mentoring and advocacy. I’ve been talking back-and-forth for a few days with Mrs. Yani Dyckes, someone sent me her event that she is hosting in Charlotte, NC for teen girls. As I got to know her I learned she is currently competing for the title of Mrs. North Carolina 2020.  Mrs. Yani is a wife and mother of three energetic teenagers. She has been modeling for more than 10 years, and graduated from The Art Institute of Charlotte with a degree in Fashion Marketing & Management. Mrs. Yani is extremely passionate about empowering young girls in under-served communities by creating opportunities for them to develop their self-esteem.
